You know when you have all the elements of a story, and yet despite that you can't actually write it? A premise without a plot, maybe. It's effing annoying. Especially when you haven't written anything for over a month as well.

I was meant to write something for a steampunk challenge. I didn't manage it. I had an idea, it just repeatedly wouldn't go anywhere for me.

Steampunk ghost story. Sort of. Alternately, Doctor Who episode. The idea was Langel's Memorial Automata:

My dad was listening to a playlist of TV theme songs on shuffle, which led to the mild cognitive dissonance of going from the delicate, haunting Twin Peaks theme straight to the Flintstones. Yabba dabba doo! Bwuh?

It then moved through Kojak to the Airwolf theme, which I admit made me rather pathetically happy for a few minutes there :)
Concept sketch for a new universe. Yes, I'm basically having fun with a vaguely lovecraftian female Batman, what of it? Heh. Though mostly this is about Etta. I like Etta. I'm having fun with her.

Somebody recommend me something eerie? I don't mean terrifying, necessarily, it's atmosphere I'm looking for, something like "Picnic at Hanging Rock" or "Mushishi" or Herzog's 70s remake of "Nosferatu". You know that slow, drifting, ambient sort of strangeness or horror? Things like that. Eerie. Anybody got any recs?

Things that are very soothing: Going up to the empty football pitches behind the hill on a wet and windy day and listening to the wind sighing through the big barrier nets around the field.

I watched Krull (1983) for the first time last night. It’s one of the few of the 80s fantasy canon that I hadn’t seen before. I recognised everybody, though Alun Armstrong as the honourable crook Torquil was a particular treat. Heh. Oh, 80s fantasy(/sci-fi) cheese, I do love you. I think my favourite character was probably Ergo the (Usually-Not-So-But-Can-Be-If-Pushed) Magnificent, but Rell, Ynyr and the Widow of the Web were also very lovely. The special effects were … okay, 80s cheese, but the glass spider worked very very well (even, or especially, speaking as a borderline arachnophobe over here), and I really liked the set design for the Dark Fortress, the organic, bone-like structure they gave it. Creepy organic-looking castle of evil, I approve. Can’t mess with the classics. I also love that the hero and his lady had to find an alternate means of killing the baddie at the end, because the Mystical Weapon of Destiny™ literally got stuck and left them high and dry. Heh! Totally unrelated sidenote, weddings on this planet are a lot more hardcore than expected.

God, I love me some 80s cheese. I do, I always do. It’s shite, but it’s extremely enjoyable shite :)
Lovely, fabulous, joyous coincidences: the morning you're trying to pull out of an absolute fucking whopper of a migraine, some lovely soul decides it's a great day to start strimming the neighbourhood grass. Fuck you, mister. Fuck you.

I managed to take painkillers and sleep through the bulk of it last night, barring waking up a few times and dreaming (?) about my face pulsing, but it was still hanging around today and just ... so lovely of that man. And, yes, it's a sunny Saturday, when else are you going to do the grass, I get it, but the noise ... let's just say rhythmic mechanical shredding noises DO NOT go well with migraine. At all. I woulda killed him if it didn't hurt to get out of bed.

I hate these things so much. There are times when I want to just chop the whole left side of my head off and have done. Not really, but you know. Every time I end up with one I keep thinking "If thine eye offend thee, pluck it out". Left eye, specifically. I'm not going to, I just vividly imagine it sometimes.

(Side note, this may help explain why I’ve been so irritable the past couple of days. I sometimes get like that in the run-up to these things).

A random bit of a thing because I watched a nun sail through town on her bicycle this morning on the way to work. There's probably more than a little bit of a) Silver John and b) Discworld in this.

I've kind of been wanting this conversation between Mick & Martin since the finale, though I admit that my initial concept of it was a bit less ... confrontational. Heh. Might I reiterate that both Martin and Ray between them have the survival instincts of particularly antsy lemmings?

Title: A Verbal Exchange of Views

Okay, I liked that. I can't remember how I found it, I think I saw the name mentioned on a random stroll through TV Tropes, but I did like that.

I've just read through a book of short stories by Manly Wade Wellman (hell of a name) called "John the Balladeer", about a man named John, just John, who wanders around the Appalachian mountains post-Korean war with his silver-stringed guitar, encountering and fighting various spirits and magic men/women, usually with music. It's ... I liked it a lot. It hits a couple of my favourite motifs, the mystic minstrel, a-la the Pied Piper, and the wandering exorcist, a-la Kusuriuri/the Medicine Seller from Mononoke. John is interesting, a polite, soft-spoken, perpetually penniless musician who's too curious for his own good, always moves to help people if he can, and has a bit of a vindictive streak with people he doesn't like.

A lot of what I liked about the stories, though, are the descriptions, of the mountains and the people and the food (he talks about food a lot, hot damn, I was starving after reading this and I don't even like pork that much) and the music. There's a sense of place and rhythm and mystery in the stories. I really do like them a lot. Very folklorish, and a familiar kind of folklore to me too, like something not too far from what I'd read in a book of the Irish ghost stories I grew up with. There's moments when the stories really feel out of time, like they could have happened any time in the last three centuries, and it's only when John or somebody starts talking about the war or radar or the doppler effect that you can date them again.

I might look up more by this guy now. He's interesting.

Well, that was stupid. I haven’t done that since I was a kid. I’ve just managed to fall spectacularly and somehow smash open two of my toes. That’s … surprisingly messy. And painful. Ow. I’d forgotten how bad I am at pain.

To quote Daffy Duck: I’m not like other people. I can’t stand pain. It hurts me.

I have a lot of sympathy for that cartoon duck sometimes.
Martin's experience of 1x05 "Fail Safe". Yes, I am obsessed with this episode. It's my favourite, and Martin ... Oh god, poor Martin.
