I watched Krull (1983) for the first time last night. It’s one of the few of the 80s fantasy canon that I hadn’t seen before. I recognised everybody, though Alun Armstrong as the honourable crook Torquil was a particular treat. Heh. Oh, 80s fantasy(/sci-fi) cheese, I do love you. I think my favourite character was probably Ergo the (Usually-Not-So-But-Can-Be-If-Pushed) Magnificent, but Rell, Ynyr and the Widow of the Web were also very lovely. The special effects were … okay, 80s cheese, but the glass spider worked very very well (even, or especially, speaking as a borderline arachnophobe over here), and I really liked the set design for the Dark Fortress, the organic, bone-like structure they gave it. Creepy organic-looking castle of evil, I approve. Can’t mess with the classics. I also love that the hero and his lady had to find an alternate means of killing the baddie at the end, because the Mystical Weapon of Destiny™ literally got stuck and left them high and dry. Heh! Totally unrelated sidenote, weddings on this planet are a lot more hardcore than expected.

God, I love me some 80s cheese. I do, I always do. It’s shite, but it’s extremely enjoyable shite :)

Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter (1974) (youtube link)

I watched this last night on a whim, and it’s actually a lot of fun. I mean, keeping in mind that it’s a Hammer vampire flick from the 70s, with all that entails (sex, blood and walking shirtless scenes, mostly). It’s not the usual take on vampires or vampire hunters, the villains are pretty cool, there are some spooky sequences, and I’m very fond of Kronos’ partner Hieronymous Grost.

(Also I wouldn’t mind Kronos/Grost fanfic).

It's that time of year again. I've spent the past two days browsing around the Festivids 2013 Masterlist, first just to enjoy, then to make notes, and then, for the first year ever, to actually leave comments on stuff -_-; I'm a terrible person, but I tried this time, yes?

This was such a good year, though. Possibly I only say this because of the first rec under the cut, but still. Such a good year. Enjoy! ;)

I'm browsing around for things to watch, and I wouldn't mind some recs? I'm looking for:

- Old TV series, meaning ones that are already completed or as completed as they're going to get. Anything you think I might enjoy.

- Black & White movies. I've got a craving, and I want to broaden my film experiences. I'm particularly interested in old horror or thriller movies.

Anything spring to mind?

I saw RED (2010) for the first time last night, because it was there to rent and I'd been meaning to watch it for a while. And while I thoroughly enjoyed pretty much everything in it (particularly Malkovich and Urban), I really only have one substantive thing to say:

"If there's one thing I've learned, it's never be the first to stick your hand in a viscous material." (Carl, Van Helsing).

Words to live by. This message may or may not have been brought to you by my narrowly avoiding sticking my finger in boiling water under the impression it was cold. Um. In my defense, it was the am, I wasn't exactly sentient at the time -_-;

On another note, I've been watching an anime called Natsume Yuujinchou lately. I think I'm really quite fond of the 'supernatural slice of life' genre of anime? What with Ghosthunt and Mushishi and Mononoke, and now this one. It's just days in the life of a kid who can see youkai, but it's ... warm and painful and occasionally heartbreaking, and I rather love it. Heh. (If anyone has any recs in that genre, by the by, I'd be very happy).

Thirdly, you may have noticed I'm in a bit of a writing slump right now. My brain just isn't really firing at all. I'm half tempted just to let it ride for a while, I've been strangely tired lately, but that could just be the past couple of weeks talking -_-; However ...

*muses* Hmm. I cannot guarantee anything will come of it, but does anyone have any rare or crack pairings/character combos in any of my fandoms that they think I should take a look at? Or any of my smaller fandoms that they've got a prompt for? Let me emphasise, I guarantee nothing, but something might pop?

*shakes head* In summary, life is hard. And always remember, don't stick you fingers in any unknown substances!
I saw RotG a few days ago. And Jack, and Sandy, and ... *spreads hands helplessly* Bear with me, yes?

Title: Pale-Gold Wonder

Wordcount: 1819
Warnings/Notes: First fic for this fandom, no idea what I'm doing.

Not one of the prompt fics, just something I was reminded that I've been meaning to do for a while.

Characters/Pairings: John Watson, Simza Heron, oblique mention of Holmes and Rene. John & Simza

*rubs face* Oi vey. The last week has been ... well. The last week has been tiring, lets go with that. Haven't been around much, I know. Sorry, y'all. Pain and physical distress and then family happenings. Yech.

In slightly happier news? I saw The Hobbit.

... Sci-fi noir, it does this to me, swear to Someone. And English class for compare/contrast, it's busted something in my brain. Oi.

Sort of for a prompt on [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic ('reality'). Just something that's been niggling me for a while. I've never really written for this fandom before, so be wary, yes?

Title: Gates of Horn or of Pearl
Rating: R
Fandom: Inception
Characters/Pairings: Yusuf, Mal, Cobb. Yusuf & Mal, Mal/Dom
Summary: Yusuf and Mal, a layer above. Where does death stop, and the dream begin?

I saw this meme, what are your comfort reads, the books you turn to when you're having a really shitty day and you just want to go away for a while. *smiles* I have a few of those. However, because of the way we grew up (Mam's obsession was books, Dad's was film), I also have comfort films and comfort series that I'm equally as likely to turn to, and to bring with me when I'm travelling. So, I thought I'd run through all of them? Books, films, series. Lots.

The original meme had around 9 books, I think, but numbers vary here, because, um, I devour stories in pretty much any format. There are just the ones that are likely to be closest when I'm in need, but they are not comprehensive, even for comfort -_-;

Comfort Media:

And on top of all those, I could name you about a dozen or so cartoon series that I also gravitate towards under stress (DCAU, Avengers: EMH, Transformers, Pirates of Dark Water, Jonny Quest, etc). And these are ... far from comprehensive, either.

Media is my escape, yes? Stories. *smiles sheepishly* I read, I watch, I devour. I also write. Fanfic, a lot. Also many of my own (see 'original fic' tags for the universes), long and complicated stories that don't really end. I live my life in a network of a billion stories, and it carries me though ... quite a lot, really. Heh. *shrugs, smiles* And so.

I've been away for a bit. *drops head* I was away-away last weekend (small holiday, not before time), and just ... pretty dead this week? *shakes head at self* It's been one of those weeks.

On the upside, I found a new-old series to adore, while on my holiday. *grins* Does anyone remember an old western from the 70s called Alias Smith & Jones? Because I hadn't, but now I've found it, and it is awesome. *grins* The main characters are the most adorable pair of outlaws I've ever seen, I swear.

I have a thing for TV westerns, yes. Also movie westerns. And for scoundrels, and walking-the-earth, and wandering heroes, and conmen. This most people should realise by this point. And Heyes, I love Heyes, and the Kid, and poor Lom. *smiles* Probably should have figured I'd enjoy this one, yes? Heh.

I also picked up the complete series of Hornblower, and the Barnabas Collins episodes of Dark Shadows, because they had the set on sale and I've been curious for a while. And my sister and I more or less spent our holiday admiring heroic and/or tricksy men in period costume, because why the hell not? *grins*

Regarding Hornblower ... Captain Pellew is still my favourite (he got out and rowed the ship, I'm never getting over that). And Edrington was as snippy and awesome as I remembered him, too. *grins* Look. I have a thing. I like having the thing. These are my happy genres, yes? *smiles faintly, shakes head at self*

So. I'm watching through ASAJ at the minute, with sidelines into the Napoleonic Wars, and gothic vampires waiting in the wings. It is ... rather pleasant, really. Heh.
The Dark City prompt ficlet, Wishes Were Fishes. WARNINGS for discussion of the movie, and in particular the complete lack of consent possible in the setting (the fic was pre-movie Daniel, so):

Wordcount: 895

Title: Wishes Were Fishes
Rating: R
Fandom: Dark City (1998)
Characters/Pairings: Dr Daniel Screber, gen
Summary: In one sense, Daniel has never had a kiss, first or otherwise
Wordcount: 492
Warnings/Notes: Dark City did horrible, horrible things to the concept of free will (via mindwipe, mostly, the odd bit of torture), so there's consent issues all over the place with this
Disclaimer: Not mine

For a prompt on [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic. And yes, before you ask, I may be prompted to insanity at the drop of a hat -_-;

Title: Shades of Sanity

Title: Echoes, Wakening
Rating: PG-13
Fandom: Dark City
Characters/Pairings: Daniel Schreber, John Murdoch. Daniel & John
Summary: Post movie. Standing in the echoes of false and fallen lives, what do they do now?
Wordcount: 863
Warnings/Notes: Aftermath of the Strangers, particularly for Daniel
Disclaimer: Not mine

For a prompt on [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic, asking for a fusion of Who with Fritz Lang's Metropolis. Which was ... wow. Now there's a thought or twenty (or roughly five billion). Um. Not sure how well this came out, I had to smush some of the parallels together - The Time Lords for the City Masters, Davros for Rotwang, simple enough, but the Doctor is taking both Freder and Maria, and bits of Robo!Maria, and he's sharing the last with the Daleks, and the first two with one other Time Lord, so ... *grins sheepishly* Possibly somewhat confused -_-;

Title: Parables
Rating: PG-13, mostly for canon implications
Fandom: Doctor Who (focus on NuWho, Fourth and Sixth Doctor eras), Lang's Metropolis
Characters/Pairings: Rassilon, the Doctor, the Time Lords, Davros, the Daleks, one specific Time Lord that I think I'll leave 'til the end
Summary: Come, Time Lords, and listen to the parable of the Head, the Heart, and the Hands
Wordcount: 1200
Warnings/Notes: Implications of the Time War, and perhaps more than a little insanity on Rassilon's part. Not, perhaps, unjustifiably -_-;
Disclaimer: Nothing is mine
