*grumbles to self* I'm working on a short original piece. Just a small thing, for myself. Heh. Over the past two evenings, I've started it over three times, before I managed to figure out what was wrong.
Don't start with the exposition, honey. No matter how much you want to give context for the scene. It never works for you. Start in media res, with the character interactions, and let them carry it. It's the only way this sort of thing ever works for you.
*grumps* It never does, you know. Sometimes, I go back and stick the lead-up on the front of the fic, but quite a lot of the time, I actually have to start in the middle of the action, or I just get bogged down and tangled up, and it doesn't go anywhere. *sighs*
State, then explain. Action, then rationale. People are better at picking stuff up as we go along that you think, dearie. *mutters at self*
