I haven't been online much the last month or so. RL, mostly. I'm still jobless, incidentally. *sighs* Oh well. I've been doing a lot of reading and random research (really random) for distraction purposes lately. Which is how I ended up looking at the list of London Livery Companies (guilds, more or less), including their list of mottos. Some of them are amazing.
I like the Chartered Surveyors motto (Modus ab Initio, Method from the Start). I'm a bit curious as to why the Cooks motto is Vulnerati Non Victi (Wounded not Conquered) or why the Poulters have 'Remember Your Oath', which seems a little ominous for poultry. The Spectacle Makers are interesting (A Blessing to the Aged), the Playing Card Makers seem mildly ironic (Corde Recto Elati Omnes - With An Upright Heart All Are Exalted), and Insurers arguably very ironic depending on your opinion of the insurance game (Omnium Defensor - Protector of All). I really like the Glass Sellers (Discordia Frangimur - Discord Weakens), it seems to have some interesting history behind it.
My favourite is the Bowyers (Bowmakers), though. Their motto, instead of a prayer, latin phrase, or list of values, is simply three place names: Crécy, Poitiers, Agincourt. I think that's the most amazingly, placidly pointed statement of value I've ever seen. I adore it.
