I hate being sick. My apologies for being missing for a while, I've just spent a lovely few days either dopey as hell, or throwing up, so ... yeah. Fun times.
On the upside, I spent a lot of those few days mainlining episodes of Sanctuary. Mostly seasons 2 and 3, since season 1 seems to be somewhat harder to find. *grins* And it is ... uneven, but awesome. Really, really awesome.
Ahem. Rant and squee brought to you by too long cooped up, and possibly a lingering fever. *grins sheepishly* But damn, I like this show!

This is one of those shows, I think, where I fall in love with it purely for the sake of the characters. *grins* The seriously awesome characters. The kind of show where a large portion of the plot, and the enjoyment of the plot, seems to come from dumping these people in a world together and watching the resultant (and freakishly often literal) explosions. Though I do love the history woven in around it (hugely inaccurate as it sometimes appears to be ... when was Tesla ever in Oxford?), and the sheer ... evocativeness of the setting and the plot. But mostly the characters. *smiles*
Run-away favourites, though, would have to be Tesla and Henry. Also Kate, for some reason. But Tesla and Henry ... after watching 3x08 I sorta wanted to watch them take over the world together, or something. Not because the world would be even remotely safe in their hands, but because they'd be sure to go about it in seriously awesome ways.
Not that Tesla hasn't already managed a good deal of that on his own, mind. *grins* If only he had a better grasp of how people actually function, he'd be really scary, that man. Also, maybe a wee bit more planning, and less jumping in at the deep end with a cool idea. He's sort of ... childlike, in that regard. Look at me, look what I made! *grins at him*
But I love how he keeps getting up and jumping back in, no matter what happens to him, and quite a lot does. (It occurs to me that the ability to persist despite repeated failure is a quality I admire in people, often regardless of what kind of person they are around it ... this should possibly worry me). I love, too, how completely unangsty he is about it. Well, compared to other fictional vampires I've seen, anyway. Mind you, in a show with a semi-remorseful Jack the Ripper, and an immortal woman who keeps losing the people she cares about, angst is probably a relative term -_-; But with Tesla it's ... okay, I've just lost everything ... what's the nearest option for getting it back, and how can I make it work? And when that fails ... next option again. He just ... doesn't seem to give up, and I kinda love that.
Among the rest of the cast ... I love the Old City Sanctuary staff as its own little family, more than individual members (the exception being Henry, who is fifteen different kinds of adorable, and a geek, and a long-suffering wise-ass to boot). I love the friendships, Will and Henry, Henry and the Big Guy, Kate and the Big Guy, Will and Magnus, Kate and Henry ... I love the way they all interact with each other, and influence each other, and do their damndest to keep each other as relatively intact and sane as possible, while ribbing the hell out of each other the whole way.
I also loved Ashley, what little I saw of her. And I loved the mother-daughter relationship she had with Helen. The way that ended ... *wibbles a little*
Of the Five ... John is ... interesting. Also, scary as hell when he's in the mood, though granted that's sort of expected for Jack the Ripper -_-; And he pulls it off very well indeed. The thing about John, though, is the lurking humanity underneath. As a character, he's a fantastic blend of scary-as-hell and utter woobie, which is ... truly fascinating to watch. Not sure how I feel about John/Helen, aside from ... evocative, complicated, tragic, compelling as hell, and probably very, very unhealthy for all concerned -_-; The connection is undoubtedly electric, it's just that electricity can be lethal ...
Helen herself worries me. Far more than John, or Tesla, though the two of them are the more immediately dangerous. Because Helen ... is nuts. Passionate, visionary, reckless, courageous, and absolutely nuts. And that probably makes her the single most dangerous character going. By the end of season 2, I'm firmly convinced that there is genuinely nothing that woman will not do if she deems it necessary, and that is very, very worrying.
By comparison, Tesla seems almost restful. Yes, hidden agenda in every corner, yes, army of vampires, yes, attempting to take over the world, but there's a kind of ... predictability about Tesla that makes him much safer to be around. And a kind of ... *smiles* A kind of boyish charm. Plus an odd sort of ... idealism. I think he genuinely did think giving the death ray plans to all the world governments would force peace. I think he genuinely believes that science and knowledge will make a better world, and all he needs is the chance to show people that. And get a few nice ego-stroking benefits and a decent throne out of it, of course ;) People just keep disappointing him in that regard. *sighs* What's a megalomaniac vampire to do?
James and Nigel ... I sort wish we'd gotten to see more of them. They seem the sanest of the bunch, really. Not that that's saying all that much, with the Five. But Nigel in particular seemed to be a relatively ordinary, pragmatic man, along for the visionary ride and quite happy to pick up some side benefits (and a few banks) along the way. Heh. He wasn't as ... relentlessly driven as the rest. And James ... well, I love Peter Wingfield, and comparing Watson and Methos was ... interesting. *grins* And watching James and John, the pain there, the anger ... that was fascinating. And very, very painful. Heh.
Um. In short? I think I like this show. *grins* I also think having to wait until ... April? Is it? ... for the end of the season is going to be a bitch. *grumps* Why do shows keep stopping half-way through seasons? It's bloody annoying!
