icarus_chained: Three and the Brig (Who)

Comment to this entry and I'll give you a letter. List ten things that you love that begin with that letter and then post that list on your journal.

[personal profile] senmut gave me 'b':

Bruschetta (Food) - My favourite starter of all time. I particularly love a variation that had parmesan cheese grated over the top and lightly (very lightly) toasted in. Bread and tomatoes and olive oil and herbs and cheese. Delicately done. Beautiful. *kisses fingertips extravagantly*

Blake's 7 (TV) - It was depressing as hell. It had a bodycount to rival Shakespearean tragedy. Nobody, and I mean nobody, had morals that stood up to close scrutiny. A couple of people just flat-out did not have morals. It had the ultimate downer ending. It was the epitome of British cynicism. I adored the hell out of it!

Batfamily (Characters) - One of the most dysfunctional adoptive families in fiction, and yet also one of the most loyal, the most tight-knit, and the most badass. Centered around Bruce, held together by Alfred, stretching out through friend and family to touch waaaay more of the Superhero world than it probably should. The dynamics are just awesome, and the people beautiful.

Big Ted (Teddy Bear) - *grins childishly* My oldest friend. I've had him since just after my birth, so he's probably a little older than I am. In early photos, he's plump and golden. Now he's flat as a pancake, dull beige and more than a little threadbare. Whither I goest, he follows with me. *snuggles him*

Books (Object & Concept) - As part and parcel of my longstanding love affair with the written word. I have to have at least one in range at all times, more or less regardless of actual content, and preferably a small library's worth if I'm living anywhere. An actual library is always a bonus. The two things I look for when stopping in any one place are the nearest bookshop and the nearest library. Always.

Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart (Character) - British military stiff-upper-lip, and perfectly done. Nothing disconcerts him for long, though any number of Doctors have tried, and for Three he was the touchstone. I love him to pieces.

Bottles (Object) - Not sure why. Glass bottles in particular. Especially vials, perfume bottles, medicine bottles, glass jars, decanters (the heavier the better, and with glass stoppers, not plastic), segmented bottles, metal bottles ... I just have a thing for stoppered vessels, I think, and for functional glasswork.

Bravery (Concept) - One of my all time favourite virtues, perhaps mostly because it can manifest regardless of moral stance. Bravery is neither good nor evil, though it is admirable, and even the baddest of the bad can show it. Courage is an elemental part of why I think humanity did earn its place, the will to move past instinctive fears and keep going being a strong part of how we got to where we are.

Bed (Object & Concept) - I have fantasies (not that kind). Having spent most of my life teetering between insomniac, noctural and comatose, bed is retreat and lair and reward all at once, and there are times when there is not one single thing I want more in life than just one more hour. Just ten minutes more. Bed is soft and warm and doesn't tell you to bugger off, and while in it you can tell other people to bugger off, and basically it's wonderful.

Brothers-in-arms (Concept) - I love slash. I really do. Sometimes, though, I wish it could take a back seat to this kind of relationship more often. Possibly because I'm asexual, but when you have someone who'll stand by you no matter what, who'll defend you and be defended by you, who'll live and fight and die by your side, who'll hate your guts but protect you anyway, when you have that ... what the hell do you need sex for? No offense to anyone, by the way. It just baffles me a bit.

I hope and pray, when you see the comicsbigbang I am writing, it feeds your brothers-in-arms thing in so many ways.

And I gave you B for Brigadier.

I adore the Batfamily! And books, the Brigadier, bravery, and brothers-in-arms. And bed, for bed is a wonderful, wonderful thing. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

For Highlander not-slash, I randomly recommend Sylvia Volk (assuming, of course, that you haven't come across her already). Vivid characterisation, original characters and history. The Good Student has Duncan and Methos, definitely friends, although perhaps closer to teacher and student than brothers-in-arms.
