Random Penny Dreadful/Dracula Realisation
Wow, I'm slow. Penny Dreadful, despite the crazy monster mash they're rolling with, actually did keep the same basic roles as the original Dracula team, and I missed it. *facepalm* I should have noticed that as soon as Ethan walked on screen, since he's basically Quincey. The show just transposed new/different characters into the role slots of the original team.
Okay, the original Dracula Cast:
Mina Harker - woman who has tasted of blood and is tranced and controlled by evil forces
Lord Godalming/Arthur Holmwood - a man of noble birth who loses a loved one to vampirism and is forced to kill her, joining the party
Quincey Morris - American cowboy and explorer who joins the party
Jack Seward - a doctor, a student of Professor Van Helsing, who joins the party
Lucy Westenra - woman who was taken, became a vampire, and finally challenged and killed by those she loved
Dr Abraham Van Helsing - a professor with experience against vampires who realises what happened to Lucy and works to stop Dracula
Jonathan Harker - Mina's husband who was imprisoned by Dracula, barely escapes with his life, and joins the party to ensure Mina's safety, finally killing Dracula with help from Quincy
Now, while Penny Dreadful has gone and confused that all to buggery, since Mina, Jonathan and Van Helsing all exist in their world but all ended up with radically different fates, the show DID actually keep the basic roles and layout of the original Dracula party, they just switched people around and got rid of a couple of characters.
Essentially, Vanessa took Mina's role, while Mina took Lucy's. Sir Malcolm took Lord Godalming's role, though with a vampirised daughter rather than a fiance, and since this version killed Van Helsing before he could be of much use, also graduated to the Professor's role as well. Ethan and Victor are Quincey and Seward, respectively, with a few little twists to the roles, although they did managed to keep Seward's relationship with Van Helsing by having Victor be briefly mentored by him.
So we've still got a party with a woman possessed by evil and with supernatural knowledge of the vampire's whereabouts, a noble whose loved one became a vampire and who is seeking to save her/avenge her once he's forced to kill her, an American cowboy/explorer with a few extra peccadillos, and a doctor with connections to the occult/supernatural who was mentored by Professor Van Helsing. The main differences are, they killed Van Helsing himself before he could do more than give Victor some advice, and Jonathan never (yet) joined the party because of the transposition of Vanessa/Mina/Lucy. Oh, and Lucy was simply gotten rid of outright, at least so far.
I really ought to have figured that out as soon as Ethan and Victor came in range of Vanessa. Oi. I'm asleep, never mind me.
