Small drabble. Possibly will become part of a series of DC fairytale drabbles. But not now, since I have the mother of all headaches. -_-;

A Gotham Fairytale

Once upon a time, a dark and desperate kingdom was defended by a black knight, a fearsome champion whose visage struck fear into all who saw it. Loyal was he, this dark knight, and loving, for he had a white heart, and his blood was spilt only in honour. For many years, this knight lived and bled and fought for his kingdom, until she breathed easier in her sleep, and her people grew to love him in their fear.

But the knight was no monster, to live forever as monsters do. And so, as the years turned upon his shoulders, the time came to lay his mantle aside for another to bear, and close white eyes to another sun. And so the knight, aged unto a stately lord, laid down upon the cathedral floor and composed that fearsome face to rest. And there, as friend and foe alike gave honour to his passing, the knight slept until his bones became as stone, and his features pale as marble in the moonlight, and only his heart to beat the song of another, kinder world.

And so it is to this very day, in the kingdom of Gotham, at rest in the great vault of her cathedral, there lies the statue of the Dark Knight, frozen to white marble in his final rest. And as you pass that quiet place, leave a coin in honour, for that monstrous man with his white heart, and the blood he shed for our safety.
