Chances

The phrase 'stuck between the Devil and the deep blue sea' had long since acquired one very specific meaning for Sam, one that didn't allow for many other interpretations, but still ... what else are you supposed to think, poised between a looming death goddess and her impossibly massive sea serpent of a brother?

He wasn't gonna like Maine all that much, he decided. Or the sea. From now on, staying well away from the sea ...

But at the same time ... Seriously, how many chances was a guy gonna get, for something like this? I mean, sure, maybe they were gonna stop staring at him in frowning curiosity in a minute, and get to the snacking portion of the evening, but ... Well, for now, they were just looking at him, and Sam was starting to get used to being threatened by gods and angels and other unimaginably terrifying beings, and seriously. How many chances?

"What did it feel like, when Thor tried to lift you in the form of a cat, that time?" he asked. He'd always been curious, as a kid, about how that worked, whether the World Serpent had been turned into a cat, or whether the cat had been some kind of ... lever, or remote control, or voodoo doll, where if you did something to the one, it happened to the other ... And would that have felt really weird, to have some distant person in a giant's house suddenly grabbing your huge, underwater tail ...

A massive sound, a great huffing boom, shook him out of his thoughts, and he dove back against the car with a yell, Dean beside him, his brother glaring at him furiously. Sam grimaced. What? One time, he asks the stupid question instead of Dean, and he gets glared at? One time, he's the one that gets them eaten, and ...

A softer, tinkling sound cut through the subsiding boom, and they looked up, the pair of them, and saw Hel, standing on the beach before her brother, laughing softly to herself, looking up at Jormungandr with shining eyes. And the Serpent ... the Midgard Serpent, massive and terrible and fierce, looked down at his sister, and at them, and from the grinning maw Sam realised distantly that the boom had not been a roar of rage, but a snort of truly massive laughter. He stared, blinking in amazement, and two of the most terrible beings in mythology all but giggled back.

"Okay," Dean said distantly, beside him. "Points to the giant nerd, and that is really freaky."

"If it still interests you," Hel spoke up, watching them cower with a tiny smile and eyes that were vastly amused. "Jor tells me ... that it tickled. Rather a lot." She paused, and almost grinned, as sly as her father suddenly. "Is that all your questions, wanderer?"

Sam looked at Dean. Dean looked back at Sam, with that flash, that hint of a grin in his eyes that Sam hadn't seen in such a very long time, and hey! Like he said. How many chances?

"Well, I always wondered ..."
