Sacrifices

Helen leaned back against the counter, her hands curled happily around the warm mug, and watched her old friend fiddle fussily with spices.

"You know," she mused, smiling faintly as she watched him. "I realise this may be a shocking concept, Nikola, but not every occasion requires wine. Or, indeed, alcohol." She raised her mug in demonstration. "Some of us manage quite well without it."

He looked up at her, eyebrows raised in a perfect expression of feigned shock. "Bite your tongue," he shot back, making a show over covering the wine protectively, and then his faux-shock cracked around a grin as he stepped towards her. "Or better yet, allow me to bite it for you ..."

"Ah!" She waved her mug between them as a shield, shaking her head. "No thank you, Nikola. I've learned my lesson there." And then, because he did have a charming pout when he wanted, she smiled, and held out her cocoa. "You could try this, instead." A curve of her lip, knowing she was teasing horribly, not at all caring. "We could share, and you could leave your wine alone for a little while."

He grinned at that, reaching out to wrap his hand around the mug with hers, his warm fingers pressing close. "Oh, Helen, you know I'd share anything with you," he purred, the damnable flirt. And then looked down at the brown, milky brew, and grimaced faintly. "Though if we must share, wouldn't you rather it was something ... hot, and spicy, and intoxicating?" A low, velvety purr at that, and she grinned at him.

"We all must make sacrifices," she told him, as straight-facedly as she possibly could, and reached out to pat his cheek. "Even if it means choosing cocoa over wine." And he sighed, and shook his head, and looked up at her with a strange little smile.

"The things we do for love," he murmured, and pulled their joined hands close to take a sip.
