icarus_chained: gorgeous! (nebula)
Meme borrowed from [livejournal.com profile] penknife and [livejournal.com profile] grav_ity. The 10 stories of mine (well, 11, maybe 12) that I'd most like people to read. I had a bit of fun with this one, going back through the years (as a side note, I've been on LJ since 2007, I hadn't realised this), picking out ones that probably weren't the best, but were my favourites. *grins*

1: First, Last, And First Again (3915 words, Supernatural/Mythology crossover, Gabriel, Kali, Loki, assorted gods)
Summary: The first and last meetings of the archangel Gabriel (as portrayed in SPN) with the goddess Kali, and the jotun Loki, who would become his vessel.

Because I think this was my first proper foray into writing mythology, not counting the DC Comics J'onn-as-Orpheus story that I never managed to finish. And I had fun. I loved writing Kali, the vastness of her, the sheer depth, and the mischief and desperation and hardness of Loki, and Gabriel playing along as only he can. It's not by best work, but just for the cast, I love it.

2: Judgement (2708 words, Supernatural/Norse myth, Gabriel, Loki, Lucifer, Michael and the kids)
Summary: Loki's family enacts their own unique justice on Lucifer for having killed their father.

Okay, cheating here, because it's part of a longer series, and perhaps it's an odd one to choose from Weregild, but it's one of my favourites simply because I got to show how utterly unmerciful gods may be when pushed. How very not-nice Loki's family really is, when given cause, and how biblical archangels, too, can be terrible. I love playing with the darker aspects of mythology, and this story got to show it.

3: Five Meetings: Steps in the Rise and Fall From Grace (4139 words, Good Omens AU, ensemble cast)
Summary: The GO cast as the cast of a Noir novel, with Crowley as the beleagured PI

This didn't get a lot of readers, in part, I think, because Noir is an acquired taste, but I had an awful lot of fun with it, borrowing off the likes of LA Confidential. The GO cast fit worrying well into that kind of world, and I adore having Adam as the mob boss, Commissioner Lucifer's son. Not to mention the denizens of the Painted Jezebel ...

4: Softly Slipping (287 words, Good Omens, Aziraphale and Crowley)
Summary: One conversation, a statement and response

This is a tiny, tiny ficlet, written for a request, but I think it's probably my best Good Omens piece ever, and possibly among my best full stop. Six thousand years of history in the space of one conversation.

5: Strange Aeons (2166 words, Highlander, Methos)
Summary: Methos, history and memory

One of the two Highlander pieces I'm still very fond of. Some very shaky speculation on the origins of the Game, and some perhaps uneasy wondering on the Horsemen, but I still love the view of Methos I got to play with, here, and what history, as it is written, as it is discovered, means to him, how it compares to memory, and which is more reliable

6: And Death Kept Watch (1673 words, Highlander, Methos)
Summary: Methos, preparing for a Gathering

My first proper Highlander piece, and perhaps my favourite. In part because it informed my head-canon for him ever-after. Methos, on life, and death, and the man he is between the two, the men he's been in the service of both. Dual gods, He and She, Death and Life. I love that idea. Still do.

7: True Deceptions (2538 words, DC Comics, Alfred/J'onn)
Summary: One of J'onn's disguises sparks a memory in Alfred, of the Cold War

Perhaps my favourite of my DC pieces (except Wind at Midnight, but that's 50k long), and perhaps the one that makes the least sense in some ways. But I got to play with a Cold War era Alfred, in service of his country, and a J'onn that's still new to earth, still uncertain of it, still half-lost with Mars. I got to play with mutual deceptions, and wartime romance, and two old men who realise that their memories didn't mean what they thought they meant, and perhaps that's alright. The writing is perhaps shaky, but I love it.

8: Hold the Candle Tightly (6935 words, DC Comics, Bruce, Alfred, J'onn)
Summary: A DC Victorian ghost-story AU, set in Wayne Manor

This was written for a Halloween Challenge, and I've no idea to this day where it came from, but I love it. I love playing with kid!Bruce, and his relationship to Alfred, and J'onn and what he might have seemed like to a Victorian audience. Plus, there's a cameo by a Victorian Jason Blood, and that's always a happy bonus ;)

9: Against the Dawn (6527 words, Babylon 5, Timov/Londo)
Summary: The first and last days of a tempestuous marriage

This one was random, one of the few Bab5 pieces I've ever written, and it was of course one of the more obscure pairings ever. But I loved the dynamic Londo and Timov had, the mutual loathing, reluctant respect and willingness to sacrifice for each other if need be. Most of all, I loved the respect between them, how Londo chose her over all his wives because she was the only one who damn well told him what she thought of him, one of the few honest people in his world. And her, willing to save his life, because for all he's a foolish, boorish, philandering husband, she does respect him, and thinks him worth saving. I loved getting the chance to explore that here. This story, obscure though it may be, is one of my favourites. (PS: I should warn it's also one of my few explicit pieces, with alien!sex, so ... careful)

10: Heart (1970 words, Labyrinth, Jareth/Sarah)
Summary: Three years later, the Goblin King comes with an offer. Sarah counters with a challenge

I don't usually write Labyrinth, though I had fun RPing Jareth for a while. This ... This was me borrowing a love of fairytales, and that yearning everyone has sometimes for magic, and how that's his weapon, but Sarah was never without weapons of her own. This was also me exploring how Jareth, though dangerous, is also in some ways a coward, and how he needs to face a Labyrinth of his own. *grins* Basically, I had a lot of fun with it. I was tempted to put in Night on Bald Mountain, which was me using Labyrinth as an excuse to play with the Wild Hunt, but ... Yeah.

I didn't want to do any of the Sanctuary fics, because I'm still too new to the fandom, and not sure yet what I'm going to end up liking, but if I had to pick one, it would probably be Predatory Manoeuvers, because it was kind of my first proper fic in the fandom, and I still like the Nikola/James vibe in it. Heh.
