Okay. Yesterday sucked. Just saying.

I'm trying to get back online. It's going ... sporadically. Life is confusing at the minute -_-;

On the upside, I read a neat little story recently. Not sure where (I seriously, seriously need to start bookmarking things), but it was kinda awesome. Vampire story, with a kinda fabulous main character. He was turned in the 17th century, from high society, and consequently was quite obsessed with the idea that 'manners maketh the man'. What I loved, though, was that this idea turned out to be useful in terms of vampire lore, because it caused him to put two vampire myths together in a way you don't usually see. Specifically, the ideas that a) vampires cannot enter consecrated ground (like churches), and b) that vampires cannot enter a dwelling unless invited. This vampire, having been a mannerly gentleman, thought that the latter was only good manners and entirely sensible. He also thought that the not-entering-churches thing might not have anything to do with him suddenly being a demon from hell and evil and unclean in the sight of the Lord, and more a facet of the same problem, being that churches are the House of the Lord. So this vampire decides, why not, let's try it, and asks God for permission to enter his Church. Which God, possibly just in sheer admiration for his cheek, and possibly just because He was chuffed that someone had actually asked for a change instead of tramping all through His house without so much as a by-your-leave, actually granted, and the end of the story is this vampire rather smugly attending mass at his ancestral church. *grins*

And, okay, a lot of vampire stories mix-and-match their favourite bits of lore anyway, but I just liked the cheek of this one. And the fact that being suddenly undead is not the moral judgement from on high that a lot of stories take it to be, but more like entering a new social class and having to obey some different social rules that happen to be magically-slash-miraculously enforced. Heh.

Sorry. Random, I know. But I quite liked it, and thought I'd share. Heh.
