Doctor Who:
Barbara, for delivering what was quite possibly the most magnificent and well-deserved put-down the Doctor has ever received, for bearing up under the strain of being kidnapped with considerable aplomb, for generally being magnificent as only a human woman can be
Liz, for being smart as anything, and for taking the Doctor's brusqueness and dismissiveness in the spirit it was meant, ie taking it as the shield against fear that it was - hell of a smart woman, that
Jo, for showing that being sweet and generally disinclined to fight people does not make one weak, useless or in any way less of a person
Sarah Jane, for being quite possibly the only being in the universe more trouble-prone than the Doctor, and for doing her fair share of getting out of trouble off her own bat
Romana I, for being serenely and patently superior in every way, except where she wasn't, and even then making every effort to appear superior even while bowing to the Doctor's judgement. *grin* I like a woman of pride
Tegan, for being the first companion since Liz and Barbara to have no qualms whatsoever about giving the Doctor a healthy check in common sense
Ace, for being strong and fragile and curious and proud, for reminding a Doctor all too easily lost in manipulation that honest emotion was an asset, for nitro-nine and kicking ass, for being the person the Brigadier entrusted the Doctor to in the end
The Rani, for being the single creepiest bitch in the universe, for scaring the pants off the frikking Master, for being as smart as any of them, for intelligent megalomania (come on, how often do you get that?)
Discworld:
Granny Weatherwax, for being proud and solitary and powerful, for knowing when she needs help, for subverting that typical feminine weapon of surrender and making it something to respect and fear, particular in the case of vampires (you've been Weatherwaxed), for threatening to break Death's frikking arm, and having him listen
Nanny Ogg, for being quite possibly the most powerful woman going, and managing to make just about everyone fail to realise it, for knowing how to squeeze every last drop of enjoyment out of life, for having secret compartments in her knickers in which to stash stolen booze, for breezily ordering up a mob as required, for seeing no reason whatsoever for old age to be anything other than an excuse for more fun, for being the most vibrantly alive old lady I ever did see
Magrat, for being frail and wishy-washy and hopeful and about as strong as a wet noodle, right up until you push just that inch too far, after which she knocks your frikking lights out
Cheery Littlebottom, for being the first openly female dwarf ever, for having the sheer balls to be a woman in a race of men, for overcoming her own racial prejudices, for being Ankh Morpork's first proper forensic specialist, for being a damned good copper at the base of it all
Polly Perks, for being a smart (really, really smart) soldier, for knowing when to fight and when to bend, for refusing at the end to pretend to be something she wasn't, for wearing a token uniform with pride just to spite them, for serving her country even knowing all the myriad things wrong with it, for being manipulative enough for bloody Jackrum to respect, and that takes some doing!
Lady Sybil Vimes, for knowing and more importantly understanding her husband, for holding onto romance despite it all, for knowing her own weaknesses, for staring down a frikking dragon and going 'oh you magnificent beastie you!', for awing more than one mob into submission, for giving Sam Vimes something more than booze and the job to live for
Susan Sto Helit, for choosing, in response to the insanity of being Death's granddaughter, to become more no-nonsense than ever, for understanding and accepting her grandfather's somewhat inept attempts at being a family, for the poker, for being one of the few people in any reality who can convincingly tell Death to bugger off
Star Wars (original trilogy, accept no substitutes):
Princess Leia, for carrying more than her own weight from begining to end, for defiance and cunning in the face of death, for never once backing down, for rescuing her own damn self, if you please, for being a rebel leader, for reminding the boys at every possible turn that she is her own damn woman, for letting them both in despite that, for loving in a time of war and letting neither take full priority over the other, for being everything worth fighting for
Pirates of the Caribbean:
Elizabeth, for being willing to do whatever it took and more to get her man, even if I did hate her for some of it
Anamaria, for being fierce and awesome and a pirate in an age when it was bad luck to have a woman on a ship, for being a free and proud woman of colour in a time and place where that was rare, if not impossible, for bullying every man in sight with cheerful aplomb, for giving Jack Sparrow back his ship even though he'd stolen hers
Wheel of Time:
Nynaeve, for the simple fact that the one thing pretty much guaranteed to break the block on her channelling is the sight of someone in pain, for the fact that her anger makes her heal and not hurt most of the time, for the fact that she longs for the dignity of age, for being one of the strongest female powers of her time, for being fully capable of kicking Forsaken ass, and any other ass as needs it, for the fact that she can't see someone in pain and not try to help them, even if that person is a false dragon, for being just about the only berserker healer I've ever heard of. Possibly it shows, but I had the biggest damn crush on her, back in the day.
Min, for vision and dignity, for friendship and a willingness to share Rand despite being wholly shafted by the other two in terms of time spent with him, for being willing to put up with the bastard in the first place, for being everything he never deserved to have
Faile, for impetuousness and loyalty, adventure and courage, passion and fire, for taking her name for herself and then living up to it, for knowing when to be gentle with her husband's often innocent heart, for knowing when to absolutely crush those who threaten it, for being nobody's victim, for killing the man who hurt her with her own hands
Siuan Sanche, for being just about the one member of the White Tower I actually admired, manipulative bitch or no, for being proud but willing to pay her debts despite it, for picking right back up after losing everything and damn well earning back the respect she'd lost
Sorilea, for having bugger all power, as far as Channelling goes, for being ancient and held together with spit and will, and still being the last voice of the Aiel come what may, for having the survival of as many of her people as possible being her overriding goal, for taking no shit from anyone, and that includes jumped up Dragon Reborn, for being the most quintessentially badass woman in that world
