A meme I saw somewhere, and decided, why not? *smiles tiredly* An indulgence, but howandever. *waves airily*

I should clarify, these are my five recent favourites (meaning either recently written, or just recently brought back to my attention). Lists like this tend to change day to day, with me. Heh. So. An ecclectic selection, yes?

Top Five Favourite Fics I've Written:

1. Twisted (655 words)
Fandom: The Pagemaster (1994)
Rating: PG-13
Characters/Pairings: Horror, Horror/Adventure, mentioned Adventure/Fantasy
Summary: Books are twisted by the stories they hold, and love has a horror all its own. Horror muses on love, and his own nature

This is a bizarre little story, for a bizarre little movie. I've never seen another fic in the (non-existant) fandom. *smiles faintly* I don't really mind. This story ...

Okay. Slightly brain-breaking, lets get that out there. The characters are books. Actual books, with pages (it was a bonkers movie, yes?). And yes, I did just slash a pair of anthropomorphic books from a kids movie. Occasionally, that happens to me.

But the fic ... It went more than a little meta on me. Horror was always my favourite character (though all three of the book-characters were fabulous, in their own ways). He was pitiable, but brave, and had that strange resignation to him, that it would end badly for him because of his nature. At the end of the movie, when the kid refuses to leave Horror ... yeah.

So this. It was a strange little idea. Horror dealing with what he is, the nature of what he is, what it means for him. Trying to have some small happiness, despite that. Acknowledging, even as he does, that it'll end in tears, because that's just what happens, and love has a horror all its own. Heh.

So. Um. Yes. A rather bizarre choice, I think. But. I kinda love this little fic.

2. Koschei the Deathless (1673 words)
Fandom: Sanctuary (TV)
Rating: PG-13
Characters/Pairings: Nikola, Nigel, Helen. Mentioned Nikola/Helen
Summary: The story of where Koschei the Deathless kept his heart

I love folklore, mythology. The world over. I love the layers it adds to the world, the histories it speaks of, the way it makes landscapes leap and whisper. I love stories. And this one ...

Yes, there's some fudging. Nikola is slavic, but Serbian slavic, so I'm not sure if he'd actually know of the story. *shrugs* But thematically, it's a very, very good fit. Heh. The undying boogeyman, who kept his heart in a needle. The echoes through it and him. I did love, adore, playing with that.

I also just loved Nigel. His and Nikola's friendship (which I don't think was ever actually confirmed, as such, we'll just call that one my fanon), the way Nigel was outside the Five, in many ways, outside the four-way tangle of hearts and ideologies that was John-James-Helen-Nikola. Nigel was just pragmatic, and blunt, and warm, and I kind of loved him. Nikola ... I'm not sure setting so much of his heart on Helen was ever wise, but I also think he knew that. Much like Horror, above (and yikes, I have a theme, don't I?), he took what he could, held what he could, for as long as he could, and enjoyed it while it was there. Heh.

3. Into The Grey (1168 words)
Fandom: Good Omens
Rating: PG
Characters/Pairings: Crowley, Aziraphale, Aziraphale/Crowley
Summary: The world fell softly, a feather at a time

... I have a few favourites, among my Good Omens work. Softly Slipping, I've mentioned before, possibly one of the best things I think I've ever written. But this one. Into The Grey. It's ...

Aziraphale was always going to win. *smiles lopsidedly* It's a strange thing to say, maybe. I usually go the fluffy route, with these two, I like them that way, but in the context of what they are, in the context of what they do ... Aziraphale was always going to win. And I think Crowley knew it. Love, without mercy.

"Don't tempt me," he pleaded, golden eyes screwed in pain. "Angel, please, do not tempt me."

"Never, my dear," the angel said, and there was something laughing in the brightness of his eyes, some radiant, razored thing that tore open the demon's heart, that tore open the ending of the world, and spilled itself gleaming into the gloom, spread itself shining into the dark.

And yes, I do have a thing, with the kind of hopeless love that tears and redeems in the same moment. *smiles faintly* And with ... how kindness can be a cruelty, in the right moment, and how beauty really does have no moral dimension. Heh.

A soft apocalypse, and a demon falling beneath an angel's hand.

4. Nova (2664 words)
Fandom: Avengers movieverse
Rating: R
Characters/Pairings: Tony, Loki, Avengers. Tony/Loki, just a touch
Summary: Loki is broken and bitter and beautiful, fire and the ending of things. Loki is the end of them. In it's way, that's alright, too

There are a lot I could pick, in Avengers fandom. It's new, and I'm still exploring it with every story, and there are so many characters and combinations of characters that I'm learning to love as I move through it. Which makes this story ... perhaps an odd choice. Heh. Kill 'em all, fire and glory, the end of them all. Not perhaps the story you'd choose, with characters you love.

It's ... I have a complicated relationship with Loki, in that he's ... Hmm. He's hard to deal with well. He's so definitely crazy, so completely amoral, so incredibly selfish. At the same time, curiously magnificent. And he echoes through to some of the Avengers so strongly. Tony, it was called in the movie. But also Bruce. Also Natasha. The worst of them, the very worst of what they might have been (and were, at various points of their lives), and they know it, and he knows it, and all of them hate it. For different reasons, them, for being so close to something horrible, him, for being so close to something weak.

And this story ... this is how that darkness in them, in Loki and Tony and them, finds its crescendo, its peak, and for all it is terrible, it's also strangely glorious. Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose. A fire to make stars weep. I replied to a comment in the LJ version (which this links to) with this: "No character during a normal interaction [...] is ever going to be quite the same as they are at the pinacle of despair/triumph/tragedy, when things like sanity and consequences don't matter any more." That's what this story was.

And there's something ... cleansing, maybe, about having gone there. *smiles* So. This one gets the vote. Heh.

5. All The Best Trouble (2841 words)
Fandom: Avengers movieverse
Rating: PG
Characters/Pairings: James 'Rhodey' Rhodes, Tony Stark, Nick Fury. Rhodey & Tony
Summary: The one where Tony and Rhodey randomly play Top Gun in Helicarrier airspace, and Nick Fury is a sneaky-ass SOB

Okay. I admit straight up I'm picking this one largely as an antidote to the other four. *grins faintly* It's one of a genre of fics that I rarely let myself indulge in, for reasons that are probably spurious and ill-thought out. Basically, fics in which I simply have fun. Nothing more, no greater reason. There are a few of them, scattered across my various fandoms (Chivalry comes to mind (Highlander/Addams Family), Carnahan Rules (Mummy movieverse), also Cheatin' Pirates (POTC)). And, basically, I have no excuse for them, and really, really don't need one. I just let go, and have some fun with characters I love.

This one is Tony & Rhodey, because I have moments where I just really miss Rhodey in Avengers, and because Rhodey is awesome and I love him. It's also Tony & Rhodey because that way I get boys-with-toys, and aerial combat (or an approximation thereof), and banter, and camraderie, and people who probably really shouldn't be friends but are anyway, and, basically, the pair being badass and bantery in the air with killer toys and Nick Fury being sneaky and smug at them. It's just ... There is no thought involved, here. Just a quick burst of lets-have-some-fun, with badassery and banter and friendship on the side. *smiles faintly* For an antidote to all the heavier, thoughtful, dark or dreaming fic I so often indulge in. A breath of fresh air, and a whoop of childish glee (because, you know, Tony).

Sometimes, you just really want a pair of men(/women/people/things) in flying tin cans making fools of themselves, having fun, and giving the world a finger for a bit. *shrugs cheerfully*
