I saw RED (2010) for the first time last night, because it was there to rent and I'd been meaning to watch it for a while. And while I thoroughly enjoyed pretty much everything in it (particularly Malkovich and Urban), I really only have one substantive thing to say:
This movie contains what is possibly my favourite canon romance in anything ever, and I don't mean Frank/Sarah. I mean the psychotic, tragic, utterly adorable love that is Victoria and Ivan. I have never been so invested in seeing an onscreen relationship work, oh my gods. I mean, she's ex-MI6 and he's KGB! She put three bullets in his chest back in the Cold War! To save him! He wore the scars for decades as proof of her love for him! She is the most lethal and dangerous person in the movie, and he calls her bunny! He misses the Cold War because he hasn't killed anyone in years, and she takes hit contracts because retirement is so boring sometimes! She takes him on outings to kill an American Vice President! He gets carried away because she's in his arms again! That moment where she's trapped at the barred gate and turns at bay, and we think she's about to die, and then "Perhaps I could be of assistance?", I was flapping my arms like a mad person, I love it so much.
Also? It's Helen Mirren and Brian Cox. As, again, an ex-MI6 operative and a KGB officer who had a tragic and deadly past together, and she 'killed' him to prove her loyalty to her country, and he wore the scars as proof she loved him for the next few decades because if she'd really wanted to kill him, she'd have shot him in the head. Honestly. How can you not love that? They are a pair of beautiful, psychotic, murderous remnants of the Cold War who love each other and almost killed each other and want to kill presidents together and save each other because they're the love of each other's lives. It's perfect.
Being entirely serious, though, that moment at the gate was easily my favourite moment in the entire movie, and quite possibly my favourite romantic moment in anything ever. Because I am twisted, yes, but also because it's beautiful. Ivan/Victoria is definitely a new OTP. *grins sheepishly*
