I'm rewatching the last few episodes of Nirvana in Fire, and I've just gotten back to that conversation in episode 51 about the miraculous grass. I ... I just love these guys so much. Li Gang, Zhen Ping, Wei Zheng. They're all so excited and they all clearly adore Lin Shu, and they're all so crushed afterwards. This bit (heavily, heavily paraphrased):
Lin Chen: To use this cure means basically sacrificing ten of you for one of him. He lives and you all die.
Li Gang, Zhen Ping, Wei Zheng: ... Okay? We can do that, no problem.
Lin Chen: ... Why am I not surprised? Look. Do you guys seriously think Mr Righteous and Self-Sacrificing in there is going to go for murdering ten people to save himself? Really? You think he'd go for that?
Li Gang: ... How about we do it and just not tell him? How about that?
Lin Chen: *mental facepalm*
I just love how they're all ... how about we just don't tell him? Like, even if he didn't have to be conscious and willing for the procedure, you really think he's going to wake up miraculously cured from his fatal illness to find ten of his people mysteriously and randomly dead and not find that remotely suspicious? This guy is ten steps ahead of you quite literally in his sleep, you really think he wouldn't immediately figure out what you did?
But they just want to save him that much. They went fishing in poisonous swamps for half a chance that he might be saved, and they get told that it would involve ten of them dying on the spot and they just go: okay. Yes. What's the problem? He has that sodding effect on people, and they're so adorable and heartbroken and it kills me.
Li Gang, Zhen Ping, Wei Zheng: ... Okay? We can do that, no problem.
