A few quick vid recs from my initial run-through of festivids 2015:

Festivid Recs 2015:

Show Me Your Teeth (Hieronymus Bosch)

Yes, the painter. This vid is my top pick because I have no idea how it should work, but it does. This is the paintings (hellscapes, tortures, sex scenes and random fruit) of Heironymus Bosch, set to Lady Gaga, in a really dynamic, fluid, obscene, exceptionally creepy vid. It's like taking a really perky tour of hell. It is ... It's really something. Wow.

Long Live The Librarians (The Librarians)

There is one bit of this, early in the vid, which matches Jenkins to the most perfect line. I adore the whole vid, the sense of family and connection and the things they bring out in each other, and I love the acknowledgement of Judson and Charlene as well, but that line with Jenkins. I was in tears.

Love Lockdown (The Mummy 1932)

A 1930s movie to Kanye West probably shouldn't work, but this actually really, really does. There are a couple of really excellent matching shots that build a creepy and tragic atmosphere around the story. It's excellent.

Suddenly I See (Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries)

There are three vids for this fandom this year, and they are all amazing (all the ladies rescuing themselves in 'Rescue', and Bert & Cec and the life they're suddenly leading in 'Ordinary Day'), but I'm picking this one because Dot. Realising who she can and wants to be because of her relationship with Phryne. It's so lovely to watch.

Wir Beide|The Two of Us (Kommissar Rex)

I don't actually know this show, I am in this entirely for the adorable, adorable police dog who keeps saving his human and sometimes needing saving himself. I'm a sucker for a handsome pooch.

Odds Are (We'll Be All Right) (Lethal Weapon series)

There is a reason these are the archetypal buddy cop movies, and the reason is that Riggs and Murtaugh are adorable and watching them just makes you feel good. I love this vid, the theme of the family basically adopting Riggs, it's so perfect.

Black Out Days (A Streetcar Named Desire 2014)

I'm not sure how to feel about this one, because it was so very hard to watch, but it is so viscerally and excellently done. The whole set-up of this production, the transparent stage, and the way the vid uses it to make everything feel exposed ... it's excellent and it was so, so hard to watch. Also, Gillian Andersen is amazing.

Return to|of|from (The Secret Garden 1993)

This one is just beautiful. Mary, as she slowly blooms. It's just beautiful.

All That's Left Are Your Bones (Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell)

My ladies. Emma and Arabella (and Flora), and the strange and dark forces that draw in around them, and how they endure through them to pick up the pieces at the end. Haunting and lovely.

O Death (Babadook)

I do not know this movie, but the imagery and juxtaposition in this vid are terrifying. And excellent. Wow. This is why I have trouble with horror movies. So creepy, but there's such a rhythm and clarity to the imagery.

Sound the Bells (Godzilla 1954)

This is so incredibly, desperately poignant. It doesn't focus on the cheesy action aspects that a lot of people do with Godzilla these days. It goes straight back to Hiroshima. This is the destruction and the terror and the despair and the dignity and the horrible choices part of Godzilla, and it resonates so strongly. It just aches.
