Well, that was one of my more interesting dreams. I have story dreams when I'm stressed, apparently. Also, I was thinking about rewatching Legend of Hell House yesterday, though I didn't get around to it.

In the dream, me and someone else (my sister at the start, then they shifted a bit over the course of the dream) had to spend the night in 'Ravenswood House', which was actually our local disused mental hospital sort of converted into a house for the sake of the dream. Physically, it was still mostly the (19th century) hospital. The bit of the hospital I've seen, the ward my mam stayed for a bit before they managed to shut all of the place down permanently, was the bit of the house I stayed in in the dream, only now it was a big, comfortable sitting room.

In the dream, me and my second person went to explore the place first during the day. We went in through this big front hall, which had four dogs in it. Huge, smelly things, which I think were homeless dogs who'd decided to live in the place because it was abandoned. One of them had a goblin ear, and one of them had amazingly stinky breath, and naturally that one was the one that wanted to slobber all over me. They were adorable.

After I'd said hello to the dogs, and gotten stinkily slobbered on, I went into the big sitting room next door and said hello to the old ones. Four old people, three women and a man, who seemed to live there. The whole rest of the place was abandoned and haunted, but these four were living (I think), and they lived on the ground floor, and even though there was a man on the grounds who went around with a shotgun and tried to shoot the dogs for staying there, no one bothered the old ones. One of the ladies had a goblin ear, but none of them tried to slobber on me.

I talked to them for a while. It was safe in their bit of the hospital. I knew that the way you know things in dreams. My second person wanted to go exploring upstairs, but even in daylight upstairs was NOT safe. In real life, upstairs and anywhere outside the wing with that ward is abandoned, so I suppose that makes sense. We explored the rest of their wing, but I refused to go anywhere else. We pretended to be scared for the old ones when we found the fake body parts in their parlour (again, I think they were fake, but I'm pretty sure). I think that made them happy enough so that when I explained that we had to stay the night and asked them if we could stay with them for it, they agreed to let us. The man with the shotgun went past while this was happening. The old ones did NOT like him, but then again I wouldn't like anyone who kept trying to shoot my dog either. We kept the dogs inside until he went past. I got a bit slobbered on again.

And then we spent the night. Us and the old ones. We slept in a row of sleeping bags on the floor, all six of us, with the dogs arranged around us. My stinky slobberer slept at my feet, and the dog with the goblin ear slept closest to the door into the rest of the house/hospital. We were perfectly safe, the whole night long. The arrangement felt a bit like a thing I do if I'm scared at night, imagining constructing a blue glass shield around me wall by wall, with the dogs where each of the walls would be. In the dream, we slept the whole night through, perfectly safe, while the rest of the haunted house did its thing around us.

Then in the morning, after we said goodbye to the old ones and I got slobbered on yet again, we walked out the front door and were starting to head down the drive, when I looked back up at the house and the whole top floor was suddenly full of ghost children. Like there'd been a classroom up there. They poured out of the windows, flying/floating down like dandelion heads, and then they started walking straight down across the lawns towards the river. The drive runs sideways away from the house/hospital, so they weren't heading anywhere near us. They just went straight down the slope towards the river, and I knew they were going to drown themselves, despite being already dead.

So I went back up the lawn, and I stopped one of them. A boy, I've no idea how old he was, I can never tell what age a kid is supposed to be. I asked him to come with me instead of going into the river, just for a little while, and held out my hand until he took it. And I brought the ghost kid home with me. Which my second did NOT agree with, because they thought that if I showed one of the ghosts where we lived, they'd all follow. I got a bit of a jolt there, in the dream, like she was maybe right, so I stopped with the ghost kid when we were nearly home and I offered him a ... it was basically a wishbone made of rotten wood instead. One side had a string wrapped around it. I broke it with him, and he got the side with the string and was very happy with this, and then he vanished. And we were safe, and I woke up.

That was definitely one of the odder dreams I've ever had. Haunted house crossed with a fairy story, where if you know the rules you're somehow safe. The goblins will protect you. I am nearly sure that the old ones were alive, and that the body parts in their parlour were fake. It felt that way in the dream, the way the rest of the house/hospital felt decidedly NOT safe and bringing a ghost child home seemed like a bad idea once someone pointed that out. I think they were all right. I've no idea where the wishbone came from, though.

... Anyway. Good morning, everyone?
