"Wait, let me get this straight," Stella said, with that tilt to her head that combined scientific curiosity with raw incredulity. "There was a break-in in the lab, and the perp was a mutant turtle? I mean, this is New York, but still ..."
Adam shrugged helplessly, and tried to avoid meeting Mac's steady stare. "That's what the DNA's telling us, anyway. And before you ask, I sent off as many samples as possible. They all say the same thing."
"A turtle," Mac finished, absolutely deadpan. Adam flinched a little, and nodded, looking relieved when Mac turned to look questioningly at Stella. She shrugged expressively.
"Turtle-skin gloves?" she asked. "Halloween costume? Extreme fashion statement? I gotta say, Mac, I doubt it somehow."
"I know," he said, repressively, and walked off. Adam glanced at his back, and then at Stella's expression, and hurriedly moved away himself.
Shaking her head slightly, looking completely unconcerned, Stella moved away towards a quieter section of the lab, and then hmpfed impressively. At the signal, two greenish shadows unfolded themselves from the ceiling, and dropped in front of her with twin sheepish expressions. Well, Donatello wore a sheepish expression. Raph's was more defiant.
"Fashion statement? You know, lady, for someone who knows we exist, you sure do a great job of actin' like we don't," the red turtle grumbled. Stella raised an eyebrow at him, a ready glint in her eye, and Raph glared nervously back.
"That's because you don't exist," she said, quiet and sharp. "Or at least, I thought you didn't. I thought I'd made it very clear that you were never to exist in this lab?"
Donnie winced, and held up two placating hands. "I'm sorry, but the chemicals I needed ... here was the only place I could think of in a hurry. It is urgent, Stella." He tried a winning grin, one that looked a little strained beside his brother's stubborn glower, and it quickly wilted as Stella continued to look unimpressed. Both turtles were beginning to look rather worried, when she finally let a small smile slip free.
"Alright. Give me an inventory, and I'll see what I can do," she said, softly, then her voice sharpened. "But if I ever catch you in here again ..."
Donatello nodded hurriedly, but Raph couldn't resist a parting shot. "Lady, like you'd ever catch us."
Stella smiled sharply as they slipped back into the shadows and out of sight, and eyed the distinctive dirt from their feet on the floor. "Bet?" she asked softly, and walked away with a smile tucked into the corner of her mouth that worried quite a few of her colleagues.
