Vila moved uneasily around the resort, searching rather desperately for the nearest bar. He wouldn't normally be nervous in a place like this, what with the gambling, and the drinking, and the shows, and the rather plentiful supply of really pretty women ... Where was he, again? Oh, right. Nervous, that's where he was. Because he'd brought Avon with him. He'd though it'd do the dour man some good. Get him out, get him loosened up, have some fun with him ... and enjoy the benefits later, of course. Especially if they managed to pick up some shinies during the day. Avon was always in a much better mood with some money stowed away ...

Come to think of it, so was he. Another reason why Avon was worth all the snarling and sniping. That, and Avon's hands, and his lips, and ... he really was going to have to stop wandering off like this.

But instead of having a good time, Avon had managed a spectacular run of fights and arguements from one end of the resort to the other. There'd been that hologram, whatever that was, who'd gotten a little miffed when Avon wanted to take him apart to see how he worked. Rimmer, if that'd been his name, had beaten a hasty and loud retreat, which Vila had disapproved of. Retreat quietly, that was the ticket.

And then the spiky haired alien ... now there was a nasty customer, in Vila's humble opinion. The lightning in his hands hadn't improved the impression any. But Avon, being Avon, had to act all unimpressed, and try to trade smirk for smirk and ego for ego with the 'Saiyan'. Well, okay. Granted that smirk and ego-wise, Avon was a match for most people. But last time Vila checked, Avon couldn't take out a spaceship with his bare hands.

And then that man who'd looked just like Bayban ... now that had given Vila something of a shock, he didn't mind saying. The 'Doctor' had been terribly insulted by the comparison, especially since Avon apparently reminded him of a nasty little politician named Tekker. Vila wasn't sure which of them had been more barbed. He'd left before he could find out. The sight of Bayban, even only a lookalike, sent the shivers down his spine. Now, all he wanted was a drink. And speaking of which ...

"Mint julep?" came a soft drawl at his side, and he turned to see a blue-dressed man at the bar, a man who smiled at him with such obvious sympathy that Vila immediately took to him. "You look like a man in need of a drink." The man winked. "Doctor's orders."

"You're a doctor?" Vila asked, trying the proffered beverage, and rather liking it.

"Dr Leonard McCoy, at your service," the man replied, and held out a hand for a firm but gentle shake. Vila grinned.

"Vila Restal. Ah, acquisitions. Been here long?"

"Not long," McCoy, answered, and grimaced. "I was trying to get a friend of mine to lighten up a bit, come on shore leave with me. But the repressive hobgoblin wouldn't know fun if it sat up and bit him!"

And now Vila was really grinning, feeling a surge of fellow feeling for this similarly opressed gentleman, a feeling considerably helped by the pleasant buzz of the alcohol. He settled in for the first pleasant hour of his stay, and not even the sight of Avon walking in deep in earnest conversation with a greenish man named Spock, Len's missing friend, could spoil it.

In fact, as they retired to their respective rooms in similar high spirits and with similarly friendly lovers, who'd apparently found the scientific debate quite 'stimulating' ... it rounded off the evening quite nicely.

He made a mental note to look the pair up again soon. Lovely people.
