Waah! I was browsing around images of 1920s New York (for the Prohibition AU, because fanfic truly does bring you all the nice things), and found the etchings of Martin Lewis (1881 - 1962). There's a gallery of some of them here. And, oh. Oh.

Arch, Midnight is just so dark and sublime and so noir (with a hint of Jack the Ripper). East Side Night, Williamsburg Bridge is the same, with a fabulous night view across the city. The Great Shadow is another, more intimate view of a similar night-time street. Shadow Dance is a different, more daytime image.

*grins* This is how you find beautiful things. You research shit for fanfic, and get lucky. *beams happily*
Just something I've been musing on recently. When you personalise your desktop, what kind of images do you use?

I ask mostly because both my sisters seem to mostly use fannish images, and I ... sort of don't. Neither do my parents, but they seem to use personal photographs (or the free images that come with the laptop, but in her defence, some of those are genuinely nice), rather than other images. I don't really do either.

Note to self: Look up more works by Lawrence Alma-Tadema. *smiles, enraptured* It's the light, I think. The clarity of the light. Like so ... Definitely, definitely, worth a further look ...

Just back from holiday! *grins* Such fun!

Had gales and monsoon-type rains, and three adults to a room the size of a single bed, and showers that didn't work, and neighbours that heckled each other in the night. It was awesome! Didn't do much except go swimming (in the rain), get bullied by 10-yr-olds, get lost more or less on purpose, explore the peninsula, wander onto every weird little off-road we could find, eat loads of truly wonderful pub food (including a fabulous cod, and a rhubarb crumble that near had me on the floor), practice my dynamic navigation (ie reading a map in a moing vehicle while getting heckled and questioned from all sides) ... basically have loads and loads of fun.

My pups are near dead. Old man has claimed back his comfy couch, and refused to move since we came home. *snuggles him*

More or less nothing fandom-wise done. Complete rest. I did, however, manage two complete pieces of art, which hasn't happened in absolute ages, since I've mostly abandoned the pencil for the keyboard ... If anyone's interested:

Evil Submarine:

(chunky shapes and lots of shading - *grin*)

Space Zeppelin:

(guess what inspired that one - *grin*)

*bounces* In short, me happy!

Following the pen around a page again. A woman-type thing, this time. I call her Sphinx.

And a really old drawing that's been on my bedroom wall for years: Space Dust

Result of yesterday's foray into sketching. I call him Philoctetes, or Phil for short, after the satyr in Hercules. He looks like a cheerful lecher to me ;) Mostly, I'm just proud of the shading. It's been literally years since I've tried anything at that level of detail.

I've stored the image, once more, on my sister's DA page, because mine just will not stay cooperative. Here:

I'm drawing again, just on a whim, and suddenly I've remembered why art was my favourite class after english in school. Not because I was any good at it (I'm not), but because there is something so very relaxing about watching your hands shape a face on paper. Digging your thumb into the page, drawing shade out to build it up, make it real, finding the logic of line and shade and shape that everything has ... I look at pictures, sometimes, photos of faces, and find myself tracing the shape of them with my thumb over my own features. There's a kind of tactile intimacy about drawing a face, touching without touching, understanding without knowing, tracing lines with your fingers from a distance ... there's just an intimacy and a warmth and a roundness to the experience that's so beautiful and soothing. Even if you hate the person in real life, when you're drawing, just for a minute, it doesn't matter because all you can think is that the lines of this face, the texture of it, is so very beautiful.

It's ... a stranger intimacy again when you're not drawing from life, or even a photo, but from a picture in your head. Then you have to build that internal logic of line and light, find a face beneath your fingers that you've never seen, shape someone from the soul up.

Drawing ... I'd forgotten the fundamental satisfaction and honour and fun of it.

Okay, so basic accounts apparently don't let you upload direct, so I stored these over at my sister's Deviant Art page. *shrugs* I'm not bothered to try and figure out how to get them on here. Still! My first official attempt at public art! Yay!

Seahorse, versions 1 & 2:

Seahorse mk1 is the coloured lineart version:

Seahorse mk2 is the black-and-white version with the more intricate internal design:

Go me! Sorry, but I'm such a crap artist, even getting something up at all is making me cheerful beyond measure!
