Based on all the great terrors, the Ripper, Fantomas, but inspired in particular by Stitchface from Wooding's The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray. "I am a monster, Miss Cray. But even monsters want to live." 370 words.

Why are men born monsters? No. That's not quite it. Why are there monsters born with the faces of men? What purpose do these demons have, these terrors who wear our likeness, carry our blood? Are they truly human? Are they all the darkness within Man, distilled into forms that charm and disguise the blackness within? And if they are? What does it mean? That Man can never escape the evil within him? That there is no hope for the future, for the precious myth that is civilization? Will we forever be caught on the boundary between savagery and enlightenment, and never know the truth of what we were meant to be?

Well. I do not know about the fate of Man. So grandiose, these questions, and so very boring. But. I can tell you why we exist, we human monsters, we dark and untold few.

We are the safeguard. The insurance. For when some monster comes for Man who does not wear his face. We are here to fight his enemies, to rend and destroy all who threaten him, as we have all through history, with all the joy and savagery that have kept humankind triumphant in nature for so long. We are the remnants of the past, to guard against the future, when some yet unknown force may fall upon your precious civilization with a face as terrible as Man's own. Against that day, we are born and born again, into every generation, into every course of Man. Just in case, as they say. One day, perhaps, you will be glad of us.

And in the meantime? Well. We have only ourselves on which to practise our art, have we not? Only humans. In the service of Mankind, is it not worth sacrificing some little few to our needs, and the needs of the savage art that will one day save you all?

Maybe so. Maybe not. But the monsters are here, little ones. Born and born again. And whether you like it or not ... we are with you. We are hunting you. And we will not be stopped.

Sleep well, my dears, and know that if you do not wake, it is only in the cause of humanity's future.
