... Sci-fi noir, it does this to me, swear to Someone. And English class for compare/contrast, it's busted something in my brain. Oi.

Gah. I was looking up Dark City again, images and clips, and the image of the city at the end, the reveal, came up. And my mind flashed from the City to the Disc, and now I have the niggling beginnings of an idea, a comparison, something in my head.

Night Watch and Dark City. Compare and contrast. Because there's ... there's actually a lot there, there's a lot between them, it's not just the images, it's the themes too. John Murdoch and Sam Vimes. Memory, reality, darkness, revolution.

The beast within, the system without. What to do when the city isn't quite as you remember it, what do you do when the life you remember might not be real anymore, what do you do when people are dying. Who do you listen to, who do you trust, who do you let fall. What price revolution. What do you pay to change the system from inside, what do you pay to stand outside and against it. What is memory worth, what are the people put in front of you worth. What memories do you live for, what causes do you die for. What do you do with the monster inside you. Night and the city, night and the soul.

The sun rising over the disc. The future you build when the past might not be real.

There's something there. It's itching at me. There's things, there's flashes. Swing vs the Strangers, trying to remake things you don't really understand, people as things to be measured. Daniel and Vetinari, the system from within, the prices paid, the monsters you become. Mr Hand and Carcer, the dark side of humanity, the dark side of choice. Vimes and Murdoch, making a future from scratch, stepping into the shadows of people they're not sure were ever real, trying to find a way through when the world and the things in your own head might not be real anymore. There's something. A lot of somethings.

*growls* Oh, that's going to bug me. That's going to bug me a lot. Gah!
